My opinion, which has shifted and evolved over the years: I don't think any jersey number should be retired. Firstly, just from a practicality perspective, football teams are big. And the pool of numbers will continue to shrink as more and more legends come through a program and put their stamp on an era. Sooner or later, there just won't be enough to go , I like the idea of adding to a number's legacy more so than just keeping it on ice forever. at Penn State is an example of this, from Arrington, to Bowman, to Parsons, to Carter. Other guys have worn it too who have not made much of a mark, but that has not diminished its mystique. 88 for the Cowboys is another example. Sure, you don't have to go and give out 92 to any random UDFA, though the Eagles really had no reverence for Westbrook's 3in that regard over the years, which I always found odd.
